That's the simplest way indeed

I'm not sure what you mean here. The only other way I know of would be
to patch the original repository, which is problematic in several ways
unless the author(s) allows you to do so.
In the present case, the repository is purposely not hosting package
or build files, for example.
Or are you suggesting to fork it?
